The Little-Half Chicken

$19.99

DERT’s The Little Half-Chicken is based on the Spanish folktale of a stubborn half-chick that is on a quest to meet the King. On his journey, he encounters water, fire, and wind, and each are in a predicament. He does not help them as he is so infatuated with the King. In the end, the chicken gets the karma he deserves. Although a dark story, this book teaches children that not everything is rainbows and sunshine, but things can be bad sometimes.

Proceeds from the sale of this book help fund the donation of our specially designed children’s books to barbershops in at-risk communities nationwide. DERT’s social mission is to ensure that all children identify as readers by having access to books and being read to on a regular basis. Reading together is vital for all children through their preschool years and beyond. DERT publishes a unique line of books and learning tools designed to engage families in reading through all stages of life.

Description

This book was designed by Misha Dhanoolal, a communication design student from Frenchtown, New Jersey. Through her minimal illustrations and friendly conversational tone, Misha’s design and text brings to life the  Spanish folktale, The Little Half-Chicken, a story about a stubborn half-chick that seeks to meet the King in his palace, with no time to help friends in need.

This 66-page paperback is part of a social venture project to spread literacy to families in underserved communities. DERT works with emerging designers to create unique, customized books. Each DERT book features the design and conceptual artwork created by graphic design students. With each purchase, proceeds from the sale are donated to help support the cause of early childhood literacy.
