DERT wins Ideas That Matter Grant

DERT co-founder Marcos Chavez and designer Sage Smith have been awarded the 2018 Ideas That Matter Grant. DERT’s Read To Me Book and Letters/Numbers Learning Tablet has been selected as a recipient of $20,000 grant. The award will fund the printing of both pieces which be provide to The Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP). The books and tablets will be part of their PHCP’s home visit program which provides childhood literacy tools and training to underserved families in communities nation-wide.

The book and learning tablet were designed and illustrated at TODA by Sage Smith, a New York City based designer. These pieces are part of the DERT family of children’s literacy products and were created with the goal of introducing toddlers to the experience of reading, as well as creating educational tools that help families engage together to start the journey of learning the letters and numbers.

The Ideas that Matter program empowers great ideas — changing lives, communities and, ultimately, the world. The program recognizes and supports designers who partner with organizations to bring great ideas to life. Over the past 19 years, we’ve awarded $13 million in grants that have gone to assist more than 500 charities.
