Description

This DERT book was designed by Demi Straulino, a graphic design student from Easton, Pennsylvania. Demi was a member of the Spring 2018 design team from Parsons School of Design. Demi’s concept is a reinterpretation of a classic fairy tale designed as a bedtime story. Her contemporary illustrations bring magic to the tale she’s woven and by reshaping the narrative, she refreshes the language used for stories everyone has come to know. She pays an homage to past renditions of Sleeping Beauty with references to the Sun and the Moon, magical fairies, and of course Sleeping Beauty’s predisposition to sleep. But unlike past renditions, this is not a damsel in distress story.

This 42-page paperback is part of a social venture project to spread literacy to families in underserved communities. DERT works with emerging designers to create unique, customized books. Each DERT book features the design and conceptual artwork created by graphic design students. With each purchase, proceeds from the sale are donated to help support the cause of early childhood literacy.
